Help spread
the word:
If you know anybody who
might be interested in our alternative model for education for their child/ren
please help us by
spreading the word.
STOP PRESS:
Please note: Sadly, due to low enrolment numbers, we are not going ahead as a school in 2010.
We are homeschooling instead, planning to do lots of great things together - if you like the sound of what would have been our school and would be interested in joining us for some homeschooling activities, please contact us - we look forward to meeting you.
NB: The text in this website relates specifically to our school but will give you a good idea of the approach we are bringing to homeschooling.
Our Vision
We believe that children are born with a love of learning and a love of life.
Educating with awareness can enable children to maintain these qualities
as foundation stones for their adult lives. We believe the world has the potential to be a more positive and peaceful place.
We are passionate about helping to create a happier, healthier and safer future by
raising children to be a positive force in the world, having been brought up with
their needs met, their minds encouraged and their enthusiasm intact. Our Philosophy
At DLC parents enjoy direct involvement in their children’s education. Research shows that children learn naturally and most effectively when engaged in a stimulating learning environment, with the freedom to pursue their personal learning interests at their own pace, without coercion.
At DLC we aim to provide such an environment. We believe:
That inspired and productive learning opportunities happen through collaboration with parents, teacher and children
In natural and holistic learning rather than viewing education as a series of separate subjects
In creating an environment conducive to children and adults being fully engaged and excited by learning
That in any given group of committed and enthusiastic adults and children there are many skills and interests to draw upon to create a vibrant and inspiring learning environment
That academic achievement is a vital component of schooling, however it should not be valued at the expense of our children’s natural joy, creativity, self-esteem or social skills.
While supporting our children fully as they gain literacy and numeracy skills, we simultaneously aim to:
Nurture the many positive qualities of human nature including kindness, honestly, natural creativity, self-confidence, curiosity and fun
Foster both independence and a sense of belonging
Help children to communicate clearly and resolve conflicts with clarity and kindness, both with their peers and with the adults around them
Support our children in the knowledge that they have a place in society—that they can be heard, and are able to make a contribution within the wider world
Provide a breathing space away from consumer culture.
Also, we are:
Not affiliated with any religion
Committed to practising sustainability, using natural, non-toxic and/or recycled materials wherever possible.
